Introduction
Today, I want to shed light on a topic that might seem subjective to many about social media frauds and Scams, but it stems from the painful reality of what I have personally witnessed. While many argue that social media brings endless benefits, the truth is far darker for those who have completely ruined by it. I have seen innocent, naïve and uninformed individuals become easy targets for exploitation, with others taking ruthless advantage of their lack of awareness. This issue is very pronounced in rural areas, where communities already live within rigid boundaries and constant fear. Instead of empowering them, the digital world often turns into a trap, exposing their vulnerabilities and breaking their trust. It is high time we stop ignoring this damage and address how deeply social media is disrupting human lives.
“Woe to those who give short measure; those who, when they take a measure from people, take it in full, but when they measure or weigh for them, give less than due.”
The Gap of Awareness
In the society and region I belong to, formal education is extremely limited, with bachelor’s degree being the highest level most people ever achieve. The vast majority of the population relies on agriculture for their livelihood. While almost everyone carries a smartphone and uses basic applications, they lack fundamental awareness about digital threats. Concepts like email fraud, phishing links, malicious social media accounts, and online frauds are foreign to them. Because of this severe lack of technical literacy, innocent people in my area easily fall prey to cybercriminals. Tragically, in my region alone, nearly 60% of the population currently trapped in one form of digital fraud or extortion. Their lack of knowledge makes them defenseless targets in a rapidly evolving digital world.
“Ignorance is the softest pillow on which a man can rest his head, but it also the easiest trap in which he can be caught.”
The obsession with fame and the web of Blackmail
In today’s digital era, there is an overwhelming obsession with gaining quick fame and creating content. In their pursuit of online attention, people recklessly share sensitive personal details without realizing the risks. Cybercriminals actively exploit this vulnerability.
“We trade our privacy for temporary popularity, forgetting that public attention can easily turn into public humiliation…”
Once victims trapped, blackmailers threaten to leak their private data, phots or credentials, forcing them to pay huge sums of money or submit to unreasonable demands to protect their privacy. Tragically, both young men and women in my community fall into these traps. Enticed by the superficial glamour of the digital world, they lose sight of moral boundaries, only to overtaken by the overwhelming fear of human judgment and public humiliation.
“Every religion has its distinct characteristics, of Islam is modesty….”
The silent Trauma and the Internal Collapse
This trapped state kills a person from within. For some, the crushing burden of financial ruin becomes unbearable, while others consumed by the constant terror of their personal data being exposed. For women in our rigid societal framework, the mere threat to their honor and reputation feels like a death sentence. Living among these victims, I witness a community broken by deeply seated mistrust, fear, selfishness, and severe psychological distress. People are fighting silent battles every day, Terrified of reaching out for help. Having observed these struggles so closely within my own surroundings, I deeply understand their pain; because I am part of this very environment.
“And do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, no one can despair of the mercy of Allah except the disbelieving people…”
The Erosion of Humanity and Systematic failure
This endless cycle of cyber fraud and extortion is eating away at the corner of our humanity. Trust has vanished from our society; people are now terrified to help on another, constantly questioning whether a plea for help is genuine or just another trap. To make worse, the institutional system in Pakistan offers little to no justice. Cases often prioritized by the amount of money lost; as I was once told that because my financial loss was relatively small, my fraud case would remain under process indefinitely. Loss is loss, regardless of the amount, and very victim deserves equal justice.
“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere…”
It makes one wonder where human accountability and fear of god have gone. Our system lacks fear of punishment and fails to protect the vulnerable. However, those who exploit the innocent forget that the silent cries and sighs of oppresses don’t go unheard. On the day of judgement, every oppressor will be heled accountable, as divine justice is ultimate and inescapable.
“And never thinks that Allah is unware of what the wrongdoers do. He only delays for a Day when eyes will stare (in Horror)…”
